AMERICAN HEART HEALTH MONTH

Since February is American Heart Health Month, we are taking this opportunity to slow down and teach the members of our community safe and effective ways to improve their long-standing heart health. Heart disease remains a leading cause of illness in Americans, but you can reduce your risks by taking proactive steps like lifestyle changes and routine screenings.

We are proud to support our community and their life-long health goals by sharing these helpful tips on how to support their heart health.

How To Improve Your Heart Health

Improving and supporting your long-term heart health doesn’t have to mean making extreme lifestyle changes. Focusing on balancing your nutrition, stress, and activity levels are all essential parts of your long-standing health equation. Monitor your health and lower your risk of heart disease with the helpful guidance of your local North Jefferson County Ambulance District.

Heart Healthy Foods To Add To Your Diet

A heart-healthy diet supports not only healthy heart function, it also promotes healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels, contributing to your overall wellbeing. Fill your heart and stomach with healthy options this year by adding one or more of the following foods into your diet:

  • Leafy greens—spinach, kale, and swiss chard

  • Berries—strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries

  • Whole grains—oatmeall, whole wheat bread and pasta, and brown rice

  • Lean protein—fish, chicken, legumes, and beans

  • Healthy fats—avocado, olive oil, seeds, and nuts

Best Exercises for Heart Health

Adding regular physical activity into your daily routine can help to strengthen your heart, assist in the weight loss or management process, and improve your circulation. Not sure where to start? Here are a few suggestions of enjoyable activities that promote healthy heart function:

  • Walking

  • Cycling

  • Jogging

  • Speed walking

  • Swimming

  • Hiking

  • Water aerobics

  • Strength training

We strongly advise speaking with your primary healthcare provider before you begin a new exercise routine or significantly change your diet, especially if you are an individual with existing health conditions that limit your activity level.
