Keeping the Fun Safe: Essential Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween is one of the most exciting nights of the year, filled with costumes, neighborhood fun, and, of course, candy. However, it’s also one of the busiest nights for emergency services. As your dedicated first responders, North Jefferson County EMS wants to ensure your family’s evening is safe, healthy, and happy.

By following a few essential precautions, we can significantly reduce the risks associated with this festive night. Here is our official guidance for a safe celebration.

1. Prioritize Pedestrian Safety on the Streets

The biggest risk on Halloween night is traffic-related accidents, primarily involving excited children who may dart into the street. Vigilance is required from both pedestrians and drivers.

Enhance Costume Visibility

The darker the hour, the higher the risk. Even brightly colored costumes can fade into the background in low light. This is why costume visibility is our number one safety concern for trick-or-treaters.

  • Reflective Stripes: Affix reflective tape (available at most hardware or craft stores) to costumes and treat bags. Focus on areas of motion, like arms and legs.

  • Lights On: Every child should carry a flashlight, glow stick, or wear flashing LED lights. This makes them easily visible to drivers and helps them spot trip hazards.

  • Mask Alternatives: Opt for non-restrictive makeup instead of bulky masks, which can severely limit peripheral vision. Poor visibility dramatically increases the risk of falls or stepping into traffic.

Mastering Crosswalk Safety Tips

While traversing neighborhood streets, remember that rules of the road apply, even on Halloween.

  • Stick to Sidewalks: Always use sidewalks and pathways. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the edge of the road as possible.

  • Look Left, Look Right, Look Left Again: Practice fundamental crosswalk safety tips. Never assume a driver sees you. Only cross at designated corners and crosswalks. Do not cut diagonally across yards or between parked cars.

  • Adult Supervision: Children under 12 should be supervised by an adult. The supervising adult should carry a fully charged phone and ensure all children stay together as a single group.

2. Smart Trick-or-Treat Safety Protocols

A successful night of trick-or-treating involves more than just collecting a full bag; it involves smart choices and respect for the community.

Our top trick or treat safety protocols are simple:

  • Buddy System: Always travel in groups, even teens. There is safety in numbers.

  • Inspect All Treats: Do not let children eat any candy until it has been inspected at home. Discard any unwrapped, opened, or homemade items (unless you personally know the provider). If a child has known food allergies, carefully read every label.

  • Clear Paths: Only approach homes with a porch light on. Avoid homes that are dark. Keep an eye out for potential trip hazards on steps and walkways, such as extension cords or poorly placed decorations.

3. Essential Emergency Tips for Halloween

Even with the best planning, minor accidents and emergencies can happen. Knowing what to do in a crisis is part of responsible celebration.

Here are quick emergency tips for Halloween from your trusted team at North Jefferson County EMS:

Situation

Action to Take

Minor Burns

If a costume catches fire (use flame-resistant material!), remember to STOP, DROP, and ROLL. Treat minor burns with cool (not cold) water.

Severe Allergic Reaction

If a child shows signs of anaphylaxis (difficulty breathing, swelling), administer an auto-injector (EpiPen) immediately if available, and call 911.

Serious Fall or Injury

If there is excessive bleeding, a suspected fracture, or loss of consciousness, call 911 immediately. Do not move the person unless they are in immediate danger.

General Illness

If a child suddenly becomes ill, confused, or overly disoriented (beyond a simple sugar rush), take them home, contact poison control, or seek immediate medical attention.

The team at North Jefferson County EMS is proud to serve our community and will be working hard all night to ensure you have as much (safe) fun as possible. Be safe, be visible, and have a wonderful, memorable Halloween!
